Ice Age: The Colossal Chill was very superb and curious. Objective seen The Meltdown and was thoroughly entertained. Hollywood finally set aside something out that didn’t have a bunch of sex, blood and gore. Astounding one liners and originality in this. The QUEEN did an outstanding job, and Ray honest made it all the better. This would be one for the DVD Library for clear. Kids AND adults both had a big time. Thank you Hollywood for finally having something that was fun.

We went to sight Ice Age 2 the day it came out, which generally guarantees an fervent and rowdy crowd. Everyone there was laughing and clapping throughout.

The final space of Lion Voltron episodes consists entirely of the additional programs produced in a partnership between World Events Productions and Toei Animation after the recent GoLion-based shows ran out. Therefore, although the stories are mostly expedient, the describe quality falls far short of the high standard position by the previous DVD volumes. The visuals are often a bit fuzzy and gloomy, except for the inserted scenes from earlier shows, which are always spirited and colorful. The backgrounds are grainy and the characters are not dismal or highlighted. Some colors are nearly gloomy (gawk the supposedly “Blue” Cat), while others are too pale (like Princess Allura’s formerly hot pink spacesuit) . Nevertheless, the series remains highly bewitching, and even features a price current villain by the name of Merla.

“To Sooth the Savage Robeast”: Inside her humble home amidst the handsome flowers and rolling hills of Arus, a heartbroken young beekeeper with tear-streaked cheeks strums her harp and remembers her long lost like, Rowe, who was taken by ultra-droids during one of Zarkon’s savage raids. These days, Rowe is breaking rocks beneath the granite towers of Doom, where he feels the sting of the robot guards’ whips on a regular basis. Ironically, the weary captive’s emancipation finally comes at the clawed hands of the devious Queen Merla. However, Rowe’s long-awaited release from enslavement depends upon one condition: Merla will return the prisoner to the arms of his sobbing sweetheart only if he agrees not to interfere while the pale, pink-haired Queen hoodwinks the unsuspecting harpist into delivering a pitcher of poison to Keith at the Castle of Lions.

“With Friends Like You”: The sharp-toothed Count Zane lands on Arus in a stolen Skull Tank after escaping the oppressive forces of Doom, who have recently conquered his knowing blue home world, Philos. Once every fifty-two years, Philos’ unfamiliar elliptical orbit brings it dangerously discontinuance to Planet Arus, and that fateful hour is speedy approaching. Zane informs the suspicious Voltron Force that the lovesick Prince Lotor is now on the royal Peak of Dargon building a temple dedicated to the object of his affection, Princess Allura. The amorous tyrant has also constructed a series of anti-lazon missile launchers, which he intends to spend to evaporate the stately Castle of Lions as soon as the Philos Comet nears the mild Arusian sphere!

Volume Five’s extras include a video comical book, a montage of unused Season 3 scenes, and a voiceless “lost episode.” There’s also a “History of WEP” featurette with Ted Koplar. The remaining features benefit to promote the upcoming DVD releases of Vehicle Voltron shows and unedited Japanese GoLion shows. You’ll want to complete your Lion tin collection first though, `cause as you know, you need all five Lions to do Voltron!

A very new film for its time, Walkabout combines many themes in what is ostensibly a legend of survival in the Australian outback. I bellow it was a bit too tantalizing for American audiences as Roeg focuses lovingly on a young nubile Jenny Augutter but that would be missing the point of this movie which contrasts the sterile life of a young British girl and boy with an Aborigine man-child.

The film depicts the initial bleakness of the Australian desert which the two children win themselves thrust into after the father mysteriously chooses to commit suicide, but eventually shows the ample diversity of the outback as the young Aborigine leads the lost children relieve to civilization. Roeg uses a variety of cinematic techniques to paste together his poetic vision, ultimately developing the sexual tension between Agutter and the Aborigine, culminating in a fateful courting ritual which Agutter appears oblivious too. However, the star of the movie is the itsy-bitsy boy, Luc Roeg, who forms a very special bond with the Aborigine.

The film may be too mighty to handle for puny children, but it is ideal for teenagers, as it will give them a very different experience from the run-of-the-mill teen movies that proliferate in the video stores. Don’t fret over the R rating, as the nudity is fleeting and treated in a very respectful intention. In Britain, the rating is 12 for young teenagers.

In Gus Van Sant’s Elephant, we follow several teenagers around for half a day, with small or no dialogue, and with nothing to connect us to the characters. We glimpse a father drive his kid to school, drunk. We peek three girls vomit in the bathroom after eating lunch. We peek two teenagers shoot up the school, ala Columbine, all without any given reason. That film won the Golden Palm and Best Director awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Although I was not a fan of the film at all, in fact I was disgusted by it, I have learned to understand why Van Sant chose to shoot his film the arrangement he did; slight or not spot, and no assist narrative for the characters, and minute audience interaction with the characters.

Walkabout is somewhat similar to the style that Van Sant outmoded in Elephant, and reportadley also in his films Gerry and Last Days, but it was done over 30 years prior. Its a sparkling film, told quite simply, over the course of an unkwown number of days. We derive to know the characters, but not through abet legend, or by seeing them in their daily lives. The only thing we know about either one of them (the 14 year veteran girl and her six or seven year ragged brother) is that they are English living in Australia, and both aid prep-school…and even this is an assumption based on their language and uniforms, not on anything the film really tells us.

The account, as told in every review, is about how the two are mystreriously brought to the outback by their father, who then tries to destroy them, and then kills himself. They are stop to death as they paddle through the desert, until a young Aborigine boy of 16 sees them and essentially rescues them.

One reviewer complains that nothing happens. I disagree, plenty happens. Its random, as is nature, and nature is where these characters exist in this film. Not alot is explained to us, nor do I judge we are supposed to figure alot out. We are supposed to notice, and glimpse things as the characters peek them. I loved the contrivance the film juxtapozed the Aborigine with the civilized world. There is a harsh, yet astounding scene, where the Aborigine has killed a kangaroo and is cutting it up. The scene is intercut with scenes of a butcher hacking up meat in his butcher shop. Although it seems random at first, when viewed in the rest of the film, it fits in perfectly in the movie’s design of comparing the similarites, despite the definite differences, between the two cultures.

As Roger Ebert pointed out in his The Gargantuan Movies II, communication is also a major subject of inspect in this film–meaning, there hardly is any. The boy is somehow able to gather through to the Aborigine, but the girl maintains her distance, probably by choice. She was brought up upper-class, and no doubt that is the lifestyle she enjoys. The Aborigine is no better. He speaks his language throughout the film, as if the two English could understand him. It doens’t matter to him that they can’t. Neither side is innocent of close-mindedness in this respect.

There is also a obvious sexual under-tone in this film. Some reviewers regarded the nudity as non-sexual. For the most piece, I’d agree. However, the scene that was orignally nick from this film and restored in the lated 90s, is highly sexual. While the Aborigine boy is out hunting, displaying his brutish masculinity, the girl is swimming naked in an oasis. The scene is not sexual as most American audiences know it. There is never a loving embrace between the two, and it hardly seems that she is at all attracted to him. Also, she does not survey him hunt. Yet to jabber the sexual urges of either character throughout the film, displayed mostly in this scene (there is some evidence of it scattered througout, also) would mean that you’ve keep up blinders. Proper, no sex occurs, but the girls resplendent body is fully displayed at the same time as the young-man’s raw masculitnity. This is difference to the nudity at the films very raze, which is prankish, but not in the least bit sexual. Its a resplendent line, and the film’s director has walked in well, without losing his balance.

This was a fair film, and I’d adore to sight it again. I bustle the viewer not to request noteworthy on sage. There is a plot–the white kids want to secure home and the Aborigine helps them acquire it–but that is not the key focus. The position is the means to an waste. That slay being a peer of cultural differences, done in a very intellegent, patient, and powerful more intriguing diagram than I’ve ever seen.

Follow The Hastily is a solid RKO musical from 1936 that gives us Fred Astaire as Bake Baker, navy seaman and Ginger Rogers as Sherry Martin dancing at their best, even if the location is rather thin. Stare also for a immense performance by Randolph Scott as Bilge Smith, Bake’s buddy in the navy; and Harriet Hilliard plays Connie Martin, Sherry’s sister. The space and the action fade along at a righteous pace; and the convincing acting was very nicely done.

The action starts when a navy ship carrying Bake Baker and his buddy Bilge Smith advance into San Francisco’s port. Bake wants to rekindle his traditional romance with Sherry but for now at least she wants nothing of the sort between them. Bilge soon falls for Sherry’s sister Connie; and this provides a subplot even though too remarkable time is spent on Bilge and Connie’s relationship, in my conception.

Bake wants Sherry relieve very badly–and he even ruins a job or two for her unbiased to form clear she’s detached available! This causes distinct complications between Sherry and Bake. Meanwhile, Connie wants marriage with Bilge; but Bilge certainly isn’t ready for marriage with any woman.

The song and dance numbers shared by Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire are nothing less than heavenly; they dance exceptionally well together especially in the film’s finale, “Let’s Face The Music And Dance.” We also net a scene in which Ginger dances by herself; and this is remarkable simply because it so rarely happened in the movies.

Look also for some tremendous musical numbers on board the navy ship. Fred really knew how to dance!

The DVD comes with a very first-rate bonus about Fred and Ginger; it has historians and Fred’s daughter discussing how Fred and Ginger got into present business and finally movies. There’s also a cute cartoon and another brief extra entitled Melody Master: Jimmy Lunceford and His Dance Orchestra. This is expansive bonus material!

Although some bear that Follow The Lickety-split is not the strongest Fred and Ginger movie, it kept my attention very well and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The song and dance numbers couldn’t have been better; and it’s nice to scrutinize Lucille Ball as a friend of Sherry Martin even if Lucille’s fragment was rather cramped. The finale features Ginger in the illustrious beaded dress that she maintained weighed 35 pounds!

I highly recommend this movie for fans of classic movie musicals; and fans of Fred and Ginger will not want to overlook this one!

“Follow the Hasty” differs from the 3 classic Astaire and Rogers films “Swing Time”, “Shall We Dance” and “Top Hat” in that the comedy beats usually provided by Victor Moore, Eric Blore, Edward Horton, and Helen Broderick are notiecably absent. In their spot is a second melo-dramatic station line with Harriet Hilliard and Randolph Scott which isnt terrible but can’t compare to say a scene from “Top Hat” with Edward Horton and Eric Blore and the laughs they procure.

So, you can skip over the Scott and Hilliard spots or bask in the irony of Harriet’s “Glean Thee Tedious Me Satan” number colorful that she will become Harriet in the Ozzie and Harriet early TV sitcom.

The rest of the movie is lustrous Astaire and Rogers, launching one titanic Irving Berlin song after another. There’s Ginger’s gripping “Let Yourself Go” delivered in an adorable satin sailor suit, Fred’s very comic “We Joined the Navy”, and the unforgetable duet and tap number “I’m Putting All My Eggs In One Basket”, a tune you can’t come by out of your head along with Ginger’s goofy and charming playfullness in the tap dance. And of course this movie contains one of Astaire and Roger’s most memorable ballroom dance numbers “Let’s Face the Music and Dance”. This routine alone shows the fantastic account telling ability of Astaire’s coreography combined with the Roger’s considerable but tranquil emoting while dancing in that amazing beaded dress. Any serious Astaire and Rogers collector has to glean this movie if unprejudiced for this dance by itself.

Dickens, with his grand humanity and that extraordinary vitality of his which created a whole world of characters, contains inexhaustable riches for the hide, though his long rambling plots are the despair of scenerio writers. His people–types, caricatures, or whatever you resolve to call them–are distict and individual in appearance, actions and speech–and are rare parts for noble actors. The trick in getting Dickens effectively on the cloak was an enormously difficult one of selecting and condensing–keeping enough to satisfy the Dickens lover who complains bitterly when any favourite character or episode is left out. Some may secure Dickens as being overlong, overly sentimental and often more than a bit tedious; at any rate, however, this is genuine Dickens! Righteous intentions and imposing ambitions are plentiful enough in the making of movies, but woefully rare are the instances where technical excellence, advantageous taste and judgement and an lustrous sense of the rightness of things combined to bring thowe intentions and ambitions to a successful teach. DAVID COPPERFIELD is one of those rare and jubilant successes. It met every reasonable expectation competently and generously, and the film was highly praised by the critics and public alike support in 1935. This filmed version of the classic recent by Dickens, is remarkably faithful to the source – rich in atmosphere and sparkling characterisations. David himself is played ideally by both Freddie Bartholomew and Frank Lawton; they miraculously seem to be the same person at different ages! If Frank Lawton seems less captivating, its only because his adventures are so unexcited compared with those of Bartholomew. W.C. Fields’ whole career seemed to have been a preparation for his role as Micawber; he is pleasing in his off-beat role. Edna May Oliver and Jessie Ralph give flawless pictures of Betsey Trotwood and Peggotty. The sunless villainy of the Murstones is done in honest the correct spirit by Basil Rathbone and Violet Kembell Cooper while Roland Young makes you actually feel the dampness of Uriah Heap’s hands! The film is a fair picture-book of the unique, custom made for those who like the attractive fresh by Dickens.

Charles Dickens, like Jane Austen, is a 19th Century writer whose stories translate very well to the cinema. It is because of the strength of the characters and the fact that most of the stories have a elated ending and the baddies waste up properly punished.

David Copperfield, while somewhat extinct in the physical quality of the video itself, as a film is a perfect example. It’s paunchy of amazing character actors who seem to be having the times of their lives in their parts.

Basil Rathbone is at his villanest, as the defective stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. Roland Young is particularly effective as the slimey Uriah Heep. And the huge W.C. Fields personifies the always hopeful Mr. Micawber. Dickens would have loved his interpretation of the unbelievable mountebank.

The only clinker in the whole cast is Freddie Bartholomew, who often comes across as a whiney twit. I’m determined Fields would have liked to have given him a kick in the pants, like he did Baby LeRoy in The Ragged Plot.

I recommend the film heartily for young and conventional. You will certainly survey the same virtues and vices in people you stare today. Unfortunately, sterling and scandalous nowadays don’t always result in the same outcomes as in Charles Dicken’s time.

When you’ve finished this film, travel on to Mammoth Expectations with Alec Guiness, Jean Simmons and John Mills; Oliver Twist with Alec Guiness, Robert Newton and Anthony Newley and A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim. Even if you’ve never seen John Ford’s THE SEARCHERS, you will have, undoubtedly, seen a film that owes it’s ’style’ to the film. DANCES WITH WOLVES, THE OUTLAW JOSIE WALES, UNFORGIVEN, JEREMIAH JOHNSON, and Inaugurate RANGE are unprejudiced a few westerns that have ‘borrowed’ from it, but THE SEARCHERS’ impact transcends the genre, itself; STAR WARS, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, THE LAST SAMURAI, even THE LORD OF THE RINGS have elements that can be traced benefit to Ford’s 1956 ‘intimate’ sage. When you add the fact that THE SEARCHERS also contains John Wayne’s greatest performance to the film’s merits, it becomes easy to notice why it is on the short list of the greatest motion pictures ever made.

Only Pawley’s cherish of his ’sister’ and determination to protect her stands in his draw, making the film’s climax, and Wayne’s portrayal of Edwards, an unforgettable experience.

With all of Ford’s original ‘touches’ clearly in evidence (the doorways ‘framing’ the film’s opening and conclusion, with a cave opening serving the same function at the film’s climax; the extensive spend of Monument Valley; and the nearly lurid palette of color highlighting key moments) and his reliance on his ’stock’ company of players (Wayne, Ward Bond, John Qualen, Olive Carey, Harry Carey, Jr, Hank Worden, and Ken Curtis), the film marks the emergence of the ‘mature’ Ford, no longer deifying the innocence of the era, but dealing with it in human terms, where ‘white men’ were as profitable of savagery as Indians, frequently with less justification.

“The Fortune Cookie” has long been one of my well-liked Billy Wilder movies, and I was joyful to glance it’s release on DVD, especially in the novel widescreen format. While the movie and performances are expansive (especially Walter Matthau in his Oscar-winning turn), and the script by Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond hits the target, I was very disappointed in the lackluster transfer to disc that this unqualified classic received. Determined, the letterboxing is substantial, but halfway through the film, the sound quality takes a turn for the worse – less audible, and almost scratchy at times. Plus, the only “extra” is the new trailer, and there is no additional booklet. Surely a genius like Wilder deserves better preservation than this!

If I had to acquire a single movie showing Walter Matthau’s genius as an actor, this may be the one, for as apt as Jack Lemmon always is in a movie, Walter shines here as the shyster brother-in-law lawyer, and the Best Supporting Oscar was awarded to him rightly for this role. When I first saw this film I idea Clint Eastwood had flipped out. He took the realistic cross from the first three “Dirty Harry” films and replaced it with some type of pseudo surrealistic parody that seemed so horrible it bordered on unpleasant taste to say the very least. However, after repeated viewing it started to grow on me and I actually wanted to peek over and over. I couldn’t accept enough of it. It certainly was not the same Dirty Harry but it had a very blunt near for dealing with crime and criminals. In the first three films the bureaucrats constantly accused Harry of crossing the line yet the audience knew Harry was moral and the bureaucrats were honest a bunch of crybaby liberals (at least that’s what the directors wanted us to judge) . In SUDDEN IMPACT Clint Eastwood is at the helm. Eastwood proposes a request to the audience: You like crazy? Do you want to stare crazy? I’m going to give you crazy. Filmmaking is a business and like a kindly businessman Eastwood gives his audience what they want. Yet Eastwood is no fool. Without artistic merit this film would have been a failure. Eastwood is playing the auteur filmmaker here and he is very successful at it. This film is blueprint ahead of its time. The fabric of a sane society is being pulled apart. Family values, if you like, are out the window. Eastwood collects the most vile, grisly and gross villains for this film that literally defines the meaning of trailer trash. The Mafia hoodlums at the beginning of the film peruse like impotent choirboys compared to the bunch of wacko amusement park crazies he ends up exterminating by the film’s slay. If Eastwood had not directed this film with his offbeat humor and unconventional style, if he had played it as a straight drama, the critics would have screamed abolish. This is a reliable film. Harry personifies that sense of freedom and justice we all strive for and absorb so dear, possibly more so today than ever before. No matter who we are or where we advance from, there’s undeniably a fragment of us that wants to be Harry, or at least have him around. “Dirty Harry” is an icon of the cinema, and it’s impossible to envision anyone but Eastwood portraying him; for better or worse, Eastwood “is” Dirty Harry, without inquire, unprejudiced as Sean Connery is James Bond and Basil Rathbone, Sherlock Holmes.

James Castle was an astounding American artist. He was born deaf in 1899 in rural Idaho and went on to be a major force in the world of American art. Jeffrey Wolf gives us a film about Castle’s life and his creative process and this is an emotional glance at the man who was known as the outlaw artist, His life shows how the spirit can triumph and his life is an inspiration. First Bustle Features brings us a documentary about Castle and we learn of his life by family members, curators, artists, collectors and other members of the deaf community. Castle was a self-taught and prolific artist who remains an enigma in the art world. Born deaf, he did not learn note, read or write in the usual manner. Instead he communicated through his art. He died in 1977 and left slack a big body of work which chronicles his growing up on the American frontier.

The film shows us that arose this artist in the middle of nowhere and he, even though handicapped, was able to become a portion of the influences of that frontier. His work fits in with the work of Jasper Johns, Anselm Kieffer and Andy Warhol.
